Yesterday I applied and was approved for a new credit card. Bird and I have been talking about getting a rewards or miles card to pay for wedding stuff and really reap in the benefits. Now, please note that we will not go into debt to pay for our wedding. We have the money saved up and both of our parents are helping, but we still want to put as much as we can on the credit card to take advantage of the rewards.
I also wanted to get a new card because every so often we end up being at a place that doesn’t take Discover which is my primary personal card. I get cash back on that one and I’ve really liked it to this point (I’ve got a lot of cash back!) but it is a pain when places don’t accept it.
Bird and I decided to choose miles over rewards as we plan on doing a lot of traveling in our first few years of marriage before we start a family. She has friends all over the country and we’d also like to travel internationally. Her sister is at school in Washington, her brother lives in Arizona and is getting married in Hawaii. There will be plenty of opportunities for us to be buying plane tickets.
So I did a little bit of research on Miles cards and read a lot of fine print and decided to apply for the Capital One No Hassle Miles Ultra for Professionals. This card is a little better than the normal No Hassle Miles card because it pays 2 miles for every dollar spent instead of 1 to 1. Because I never carry a balance I didn’t really care about the interest rate. The one bad thing is that because this card is the Ultra, it does have an annual fee of $39. However, I think with the amount of money we’ll be putting on this card, it’s going to be more than worth it.
