I’m Finally Getting Matched (401k-Style)

by Forest on March 18, 2009

March 1o was my one-year anniversary at work.  The day came and went with little fanfare…I guess everyone was too busy working to stop and celebrate this achievement.  Not to mention I forgot to even blog about it.

So the day didn’t really mean much to me until…and I just remembered this…the company is now going to start matching my 401k contributions.  For your first year of employment, they don’t match anything.  When I started in March 08, I elected to contribute 6%.  But last month, I decided to increase my contributions to 10%.

After your one-year anniversary, the company matches the first one percent dollar for dollar.  After that they match 50 cents to the dollar up to six percent.  I think that’s pretty awesome and now I can’t wait to get my next paycheck (Friday) and see what that all looks like in dollars!

Happy match month! You just reminded me that my match should kick in this month also. I’m on my third job this is the first time I’ve stuck around through the match period.

That is awesome! Don’t you love “free” ways of getting money? My company actually doesn’t have a match but gives 3% of my income whether I contribute anything or nothing. I’m not sure if this is the best way to go, but right I have been waiting to contribute to my 401k or open a Roth until I am done paying my debt off.

FINALLY!!

I was so thrilled after 2 years when my money was “free”, meaning if I quit the day after, I could take that $1 matching contribution up to 4%.
