When Bird and I started talking about honeymoons there were not many stipulations.
Bird really wanted to go the beach. That was priority number one. We figured, after wedding planning stress, going to a beach and just relaxing….that’s the way to go. So that ruled out all places without beaches.
I had always wanted to go to Hawaii for my honeymoon. I just always thought I would. But Bird’s brother is dating a Hawaiian girl and more than likely we will be attending a wedding in Hawaii in the next few years…so we decided that we would take Hawaii off the honeymoon list.
After deciding that…we were pretty certain we would be going to Mexico. Our friends had honeymooned at a particular all-inclusive and couldn’t say enough good things about it. They loved it so much that the bride’s two sisters both honeymooned at the same resort. So for the first few months of our engagement, we were just planning on that. As time went by, I started to research some reviews on TripAdvisor and things didn’t seem as great as my friends made it sound. That was the first strike against Mexico. The second strike was that it will be hurricane season in September and my cousin had his Cancun honeymoon ruined by a hurricane a few years ago. Third strike was swine flu. (Just kidding, I’m not skerd)
After more and more discussion, Bird and I decided that Mexico is a very doable vacation at any other point in our lives. It’s relatively close, it’s relatively inexpensive. We know people that vacation there every year. We started talking about how we might want our honeymoon to be a “once in a lifetime” trip.
Bird was telling me how she really wanted to go for two weeks. She thinks a honeymoon is a perfect excuse to take two weeks off of work. I told her if I had to lay on a beach for two weeks, I’d go crazy. So we started talking about mixing it up. Finding a place where we could do both the beach and the touristy sightseeing kind of stuff.
So we started thinking bigger and more exotic. Fiji, Thailand, Costa Rica, Seychelles, Maldives, Bali, Greece, New Zealand, Belize….all of these were considered or on a list at one point or another.
The honeymoon is sort of an ongoing topic of discussion. We’ve been researching a lot of options. We’ve been looking at the money situation. We’ve been searching for deals. We’ve been talking to a lot of friends about their honeymoons.
It’s a pretty fun part of wedding planning.
PS. I’ve created a honeymoon fund goal on the sidebar.

I’ve been to two on your new list — Thailand and Bali. The nice thing about that part of the world is, once you are there, it’s super inexpensive. They plane tickets will cost you, but you’ll be able to live like kings. (Personally, I prefer Thailand, but maybe because I spent more time there and other factors specific to my experience. You could do some jungle trekking then hang out on the beautiful beaches.)
I know nothing about your other destination options, but they sound fantastic!
Hey SP,
Thanks for the input. We have a friend that has traveled extensively in SE Asia and yes, the consensus is that it is really inexpensice when you get there. If we decided on that part of the world, I’ll let you know and talk to you more about some specifics if that is okay.
The only place that isn’t cheap is Singapore in SE Asia.
If I were to lie on a beach for 2 weeks as my honeymoon, I’d go CRA-ZY. I am not a lie-on-the-beach kind of girl, because I kind of feel like I could do that at any beach …
I’m more into sightseeing/adventure
I’d hit up Thailand if I were you. That’s just me talking because I’d like to experience Thailand or Cambodia.. I’ve heard so many things about it.
If I had more money, I’d choose Japan.. BF has gone there and I have as well, but not together as adults. It was such a fascinating world.
How about Europe? Maybe not the south of France but I had friends who visited the area and loved it. It’s very quaint and rustic.
Italy maybe? Spain? Portugal? Switzerland?? New Zealand?
(And I’ve just noticed most of your PF blog roll are girls.
Cute!)
Oops you had New Zealand on there with Greece.
Either of those would be cool to visit (NZ for LOTR!)

What can I say? There doesn’t seem to be many guys out there writing the journal-type PF blogs and those are the ones I like. I like personal stories, not just articles, which is what a lot of the bigger PF blogs run by males seem to be.
Also, so funny about NZ and LOTR. That’s what I was thinking, but I think Bird fell asleep during LOTR. Or at least she’s not so much a fan as I am.
