Net Worth Update - October 2008

Posted by Forest on November 5, 2008

First of all, who doesn’t love 3-paycheck months? If I hadn’t received that extra check on Halloween, my net worth would be even more ugly than it is.

If September was brutal for my net worth, October was even worse! My net worth took another nosedive down 10% for the month.

Once again, the biggest losers were those accounts tied to the stock market - my 401(k), Roth IRA, and my stock portfolio. The extra paycheck helped pad my savings accounts, so they actually had a nice little gain for the month over September.

It’s not very fun to report on net worth in times like this but I will continue to do so. Instead of freaking out about that graph in my sidebar, I’m going to try to spend my time being productive and looking for ways to earn and save more money.
(Though deep down I’m REALLY hoping for an uptick in that graph next month!)

Net Worth Update: September 2008

Posted by Forest on October 1, 2008

Ouch.  September was brutal.

My net worth took a 9% hit in September and I’m almost certain the majority of that drop took place in the last few days of the month.

My 401(k) was the biggest loser and while it makes me sad to lose money like that, I have to hope that eventually the market is going to come back (sometime in the next 40 years!).  Optimism aside, it still really sucks.  Just check out that nosedive in my NetworthIQ graph in the sidebar.

I hate that it dropped back below $30,000 so it is definitely an October goal to get it back above that!

Sidebar Goals Updated

Posted by Forest on June 4, 2008

Now that we’ve moved in to June, I’ve updated the goals in the sidebar.

Here’s the May breakdown:

- I added $960 to my House Fund; an increase of almost 2%.
- I added $600 to my Roth IRA; an increase of 12%.
- I added $122 to my Emergency Fund; an increase of 2%.

I also got rid of the chart for tracking the repayment of my student loan as I have decided for right now to only pay the minimum each month and therefore it wouldn’t be a very fun chart to watch. Plus, the HTML was giving me fits.

I’ve also updated my net worth and you can see that reflected in my badge from Networth IQ.

Net Worth (5/1/08)

Posted by Forest on May 10, 2008

I’ve signed up over at NetworthIQ and I’ve placed my badge in the sidebar. I’m looking forward to watching it grow (fingers crossed) over time. Here is a quick look at where I stand financially:

Liabilities
I have one major liability and that is a student loan. I have about $13,000 to go on that. I make the minimum payment every month and every now and then when I feel like it, I’ll throw some extra money at it. I am debating whether or not to make that extra money a more regular thing.

Note on credit cards: I use them as much as I can for the cash-back reward, but I pay them off in full every month. I feel so blessed to have never fallen into serious credit card debt. But that’s another post.

Assets

For simplicity’s sake, I only consider my bank accounts and portfolios, not personal property and all that.

I have some cash spread throughout different accounts, including checking, a small emergency fund, and a high-yielding (not so much anymore!) money market account.

For investing purposes, I have stock portfolios with Fidelity and Zecco and I have also loaned a bit on Prosper.

And for retirement, I currently have two 401(k)s and a Roth IRA.

So that’s what I’m working with.
