An Interesting Opportunity Arises at Work

by Forest on July 14, 2009

On Friday, my boss called me and presented me with an interesting opportunity.  Actually, it was only tenative, but she asked if I would be interested in working from home.  Management has been looking for ways to offer perks to employees in this time of salary freezes and they have singled me out as a potential candidate.

I told her I was definitely interested.  She said she would work it up through the chain of command and see what they can do for me.  I’m pretty excited about this.  One of my best friends at work recently started working from home fulltime and absolutely loves it.

There is a little bit of an issue as to when I would actually start telecommuting.  I don’t necessarily want to start working from home immediately because in two months I will be moving from my current house and temporarily into Bird’s place while we look for a new place together.  Once we find a new place, then I would get set up with the required systems and whatnot to work from home.  I already filled out some of the paperwork today and I put a goal date of 11.1.09 so that is what I’m aiming for.  I’ll keep you posted.

Okay, so I’m pretty excited.  Does anyone out there work from home?  Pros?  Cons?

I work from home on occasion. I would recommend not making the switch to only working from home, but try targeting 2-3 days at home and the rest in the office at least in the beginning. Depending on how important it is to stay connected to your co-workers in your job you may find that you prefer coming into the office on a regular basis to stay better connected with everyone.

I work at home and although it took some getting used to at first, not sure how I’d cope back in a ‘proper’ office. Loads of flexibility, bad hair days don’t matter! You need to motivate yourself though and it can be blimmin cold during the Winter as I can’t afford to have the heating on 24/7.

Thanks for the comments.

@2million – I’d say it’s not terribly important at my work to have interaction or connection with my coworkers. As it is now, my entire team including my boss is based in another state. We do all communication over phone or email so I actually don’t see that much changing. I would miss daily interaction with other people in the office…but to be honest, there isn’t enough of that to miss it too much!

@APOW – Those are some of the perks I’d be looking forward to. But most of all, it would be the 30 second commute. I think I would really love that.
